Saturday, May 28, 12:00pm - Sunday, May 29, 3:00pm (EDT)
Co-sponsored by the Madison Sufis and the Abwoon Network
How do we navigate having been created “in the image and likeness” of the creator and reconcile this with acting “lower than the beasts”? How can we reclaim the seed of our real self (called fitra in the Qur’an and “original nature” in Zen) when the artificial is all around us? It seems we are constantly looking for clarity and “meaning” in distorted mirrors.
We must do the work of winnowing to separate the kernel from the chaff to reclaim our divine inheritance!
“Whenever a person habitually rakes the self—separating the chaff from the grain—their self, now clear and open, will be filled with light. But whenever a person habitually divides the self from the soul, following one outer desire after another, they will be full of darkness.” –Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas (61:5).
The “Pygmalion effect,” according to psychological researchers, refers to the tendency we have to either live up or live down to the expectations of important people in our lives. How can we calibrate with a more real reference, the ruh or soul within us?
Meditation, chant, body prayer, teaching stories and inspired (inshallah) conversation.
