Social-emotional learning is gaining a lot of traction in K-12 education, and rightfully so. This holistic approach treats students as human beings, not products, and supports differentiated instructional strategies and materials. Another hot topic is workforce diversity, especially in regards to teachers and school administrators. However, the spoken desire to diversify has not led to widespread action, nor to innovation in the recruitment and hiring of diverse educators.
As students and educators practice SEL, they are bound to confront some aspect of race, culture, identity, and belonging, as these social concepts are central to SEL. Yet it is rare for SEL practitioners and supporters to connect the two missions and advocate for workforce diversity. To name the elephant in the room: less than 20 percent of K-12 teachers are people of color nationwide, compared with more than half of students. This dynamic limits the effects SEL can have on our students, as well as the potential impact on the field of education.
You are invited to join this community conversation, led by educator Stacy Jones, about how we, as educators and SEL in Action awardees, can elevate this topic. Collectively and in our individual spaces, how can we get school administrators and local policymakers to recognize/understand that support for SEL reaches beyond the classroom? How can we establish the relevance of race and diversity to all school districts (urban, suburban and rural)? How can we bring this topic to the forefront of conversations about SEL?
Please join this group session as we brainstorm ways of advocating for and elevating this topic. It is time to stop marketing diversity and start implementing it.
